This is one of the most frequent questions we are asked by homeowners. The National Fire Protection Association recommends “chimneys, fireplaces and vents be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom of deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance and repairs shall be done if necessary.” Even if you don’t use the chimney that often, birds, squirrels, raccoons and other critters may have built nests in the flue or other chimney deterioration from the weather could make it unsafe to use. To check out how we clean your chimney, please visit our chimney cleaning and inspection page. http://starschimney.com/chimney-cleaning-and-inspection/
The CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) says that fireplaces should be cleaned when 1/8″ of sooty buildup is evident inside the chimney and flue system. If any glaze is appearing in the flue, cleaning should be done even if there is less than 1/8″ of buildup. Any time an appreciable accumulation of soot and creosote occurs it can be enough to fuel a chimney fire that may damage the chimney and even spread to the roof and home.
In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, here are some safety tips form the National Fire Protection Association.
“We had a chimney cleaning/inspection as well as a dryer vent cleaning today and were so impressed with the prompt, friendly, and professional service. Our technician saw I had my young child at home with me and immediately gave her a chimney sweep themed coloring book and was so kind to tell us when the cleaning was going to be loud so we could go to another area of the house. We look forward to having you out again next year! Thank you!” – Sarah A.
